Shelby
stuff worth mentioning:
6/7/2007: Our
studio is brimming with the pealing sounds of new Shelby music; some
songs to be debuted tonight at The Annex.
We got hooked with Jane Magazine in a nice little blurb as a featured
band: http://janepromo.com/0706/talentsct.cfm
It feels nice to be
loved! See you all at the Annex
2/22/2007
- Welly Welly Well:
Where
do we begin? It's been way too long since we've sat down and put fingers
to computer keys to update our goings-on. Hallo 2007!
First
of all, Danny bought a bunch of new gear. Second, Rezzie dropped his
cool new phone into the ocean and now it doesn't work. Thirdly, we
wrote a bunch of new songs. Forthly, we're gonna play a bunch of them
at The Annex on March 27th.
Many people stop us on
the street and ask, "hey guys, what's the new stuff like?"
To which we respond, "Like Shelby, only better". (As if).
We'll be posting the new stuff here very soon-like, so keep your eyes
on the prize. In the meantime, Kenny's gonna win the big race at Daytona.

TO ALL GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS MODERN WORLD: If you are an X-Box junkie,
pick up the new kickass video game Saints Row and
crank up The Golden Boy as you kill and maim other gang members around
you! Yes, it's true, we've sold our soul to Microsoft (not really)
all in the name of good ol' ultra-violence. Unfortunately, our tour
bus only comes with PS2, so we're going to have to do a show just
to make enough $$$ to buy an X-Box so we can listen to ourselves as
we kill! kill! kill! while motoring down the lonely road. tuned
- some new tunes on their way and some amazing shows this fall.
7/25/2006
-
Although
it may appear we've been quiet lately, in fact we've been holed up in
our studio (where the NYC summertime temperature regularly rises above
100 degrees) chopping away at a bunch of new songs . Prepare yourselves
for a blast of wonderful new noise from the world of Shelby in the not-too-distant.

such good shows. Further to that - coming up we have a couple of dates
with Audible from Philly. First on June 25th at the Mercury Lounge (also
on the bill is Travis Morrison of Dismemberment Plan), then for a massive
show at Khyber in Philly on June 30th. .
5/3/2006

Doing
some great shows with Hail Social and Army of Me - Boston on May 9,
Williamsburg, Bklyn on May 10, and Hoboken on May 12.

Some
pretty cool stations all around the country are adding our song "The
Golden Boy" to their playlists. However, it will only stay in rotation
if people continue to request it.

- then click on any station's link (or all of them, for
that matter) and demand your need to hear "The Golden Boy".
You'll be happy you did, and we'll be happy you did too!!

we'll be dedicating the Golden Boy to him. Please tune in at www.woxy.com
for streaming radio play.

- Somehow we managed to rub elbows with the coolest
of all cool, Mark E. Smith and the Fall. The new Fall record is finally
out and our contribution to the legacy is in stone. The track "Trust
In Me" features vocals by Kenny & Phil (and engineer Billy
Pavone and producer Ding). Read about it on the fall website here:
http://www.visi.com/fall/news/05sep30.html
Wow....that's all we can say. Thanks
Mark and Elena!

8/1/2005
- Finally, the big party: The street date for The Luxury of Time is
August 9th. We are so chuffed with the initial response we've been getting
- the reviews have been so positive, and a few have completely caught
us by surprise. We're throwing a big bash at Gavin Brown's space "Passerby"
(15th Street and 10th Avenue) on August 16th to celebrate this release.
There will be an RSVP list at Gigantic Music. Don't
miss this one.
Our favorite PR company Solid PR is having a massive Benefit for their
first compilation. All proceeds go to National Multiple Sclerosis Society
(www.nmss.org), and Shelby is happy to be on the bill. Go to the Tours
page for more details.

3/31/2005
- Finished and in the can: With the massive help from world famous mastering
engineer Emily Lazar, her irreplaceable second-in-command Sarah Register
and the ears of producer Chris Zane, we have finally finished the remixing
and remastering of The Luxury Of Time. There couldn't be a more appropriate
title for this record. It sounds amazing. Off to manufacturing it goes.
Gigantic has lots of exciting things in the pot ready to boil over and
make the band into super-rockstars.
In the meantime....Shelby rocked Austin, TX. SxSW with label-mates Cloud
Room, Some Action and Human Television. Thanks to all at Gigantic for
making this happen.
1/25/2005 - It's Official:
Yes, it took a while. We've been promising it for over a year,
but now the cat's out of the bag. Last week the band pulled up
chairs in a tony uptown law firm and signed our lives away to Gigantic
Music. We are so DAMN happy to be a part of this family.
Nothing makes its way through Gigantic's doors unless it is loved by
all within. For that, we're honored. It's nice to finally
have a home, and they've welcomed us home with open arms.
"The Luxury Of Time" now has a national release date of May
2005. The band will be doing a few shows around NYC to dust off
the cobwebs, then be preparing for loads of dates throughout the US
and UK this spring, summer and fall. Stay tuned.
12/13/04 - Happy Holidays:
We played a great party this past weekend and actually spread holiday
joy. We've just a massive photo shoot, and the early Spring of
'05 will show an long-overdue surprise from the Shelby camp....but that's
all we're saying at this point. In the meantime, Happy Holidays
to all.
9/29/04 - Live and on
the telly: Season 2 of Fearless Music has started, and Shelby will be
featured on Monday, October 4, 2004. For NYC area folks, that's
channel 35 on Monday nights at 8pm. For anyone outside of the
NYC area, you'll have to trust us...we rock.
As if that's not enough....The band is doing two very cool shows - October
14th at 3pm at Pianos for the CMJ festival, and Halloween, October 31st
at Pianos for the Pianos Anniversary/Halloween Bash. Other artists
on the bill are Morningwood, The Twenty-twos, Elefant, etc, etc.
It will be an NYC indie rock collision...a mess for sure, but not to
be missed.
7/22/04 - Just in time
for summer: Shelby T-Shirts are now available. Men's shirts are teal
with silver graphic; women's shirts are silver with teal graphic.
The shirts were designed by our dear friend and avid supporter Paul
Marlow of kadorable.com fame, and are a very limited run.
Click here for a view of the graphic.
Shirts come in S, M, L in both Men's and Women's cut. They are
Standard American brand and fit very nicely, if I do say so myself.

Cheers!
6/24/04 - Rothko: Jenyk.com
once again has reached out their hand and thrust Shelby in the limelight.
On Tuesday, June 29, 2004, the band will grace the stage of the uber-fab
new club - Rothko - located on the corner of Suffolk and Rivington
Streets in the Lower East Side of this wonderful city. The band
starts at 9pm.
May 12, 2004 - The Vicious Party: A quality night it will certainly
be. On Tuesday, May 18th, the band plays Sin-e at Vicious, sponsored
by Spin Magazine, ASCAP, and Truthflies:
8:00 Elkland
9:00 Shelby
10:00 Pas/Cal
11:00 Soundtrak
Sin-e, 150 Attorney St., NYC - T: 212-388-0077 - www.sin-e.com
5/2/04 - Old Friends,
New Friends: A few noteworthy news bits:
On Wednesday, April 28th, 2004, Shelby went to the Film Center building
and taped 4 songs for the upcoming 2nd season of the highly-acclaimed
Fearless
Music, which will air sometime this summer. Exact dates
to follow.
The band has been in the studio working with Dan Paternostro (Shelby's
original drummer, heard on "Songs-8"), so he can play at the
Splashlight Open House Party on Friday, May 7th. It's great to
be working with Dan again - and the back catalog sounds better than
ever.
Click
here to see some wonderful shots of the band from the last Pianos show
taken by Jasper.
As some of you may know, Jasper - in conjunction with Spin Magazine
and ASCAP - is curating the Vicious Party at Sin-e on May 18th, and
Shelby is one of the featured bands. This show is not to be missed.
And, finally, a limited-edition run of Shelby T-Shirts created by the
world-famous Kadorable team will be on sale at the May 7th Splashlight
party. After the party, they will be made available to the public
from this site or by sending a request to info@shelbynyc.com.
Watch for them. They are quite special.
4/12/04: Party Party:
It's that time of year, and Shelby has been asked to play a couple of
very special shows that could only happen in NYC. The first fete is
the Springtime Happy Hour Party at Splashlight Studios on May 7th.
Splashlight's open air veranda and massive photography studio allow
plenty of space for the hipsters and ultra chic to rub shoulders and
elbows and be oh, so fabulous. Then onto The Vicious Party on
May 18th, this time occuring at Sin-e. The Vicious Party's reputation
precedes itself as being the arbiter of what's happening in the NYC
music world, and we're honored to be looked upon so viciously.
This one is guaranteed to please.
3/29/04: Pianos
Enjoy the cherry blossoms - celebrate spring - join us in an evening
of flowery sounds at Pianos on Monday, April 5, 2004 at 8:30pm.
Kenny, Phil, Paul Moschella and Claudia Chopek.
2/5/03: Shows A couple
of dates added to the shows page. We're all shakin' now.
Sin-e: Feb 18th, 8:30 PM
Knitting Factory, March 9, 8:30 PM
SxSW, Austin, TX, March 17-21
1/13/04: Boston
Although things seem to have been quiet lately, that could not be further
from the truth. More on this at a later date.
In the meantime.... having had such a great time at the Paradise in
Boston recently, we decided to return to Beantown sooner rather than
later -- this time downstairs at the Middle East on Friday, January
16th. We're playing with Ambulance Ltd. who are kicking up quite
a storm with their new record. Shelby goes on at 10pm.
12/11/03: Pianos
A bloody great show is lined up for Wednesday, December 17th at Pianos
in the lower east side of NYC. KC & PS will be there, as will
Paul and Claudia. As always, details are on the shows page.
10/21/03: Home London was smashing. We did
some cool shows and made some cool friends. Thanks to all the
bands who loaned us support and gear, including France's Sweet Apple
Pie and NYC's Mommy & Daddy. Traveling as a duo (Phil and
Kenny - the glimmer twins) might have brought interesting results auditioning
shite drummers from far away lands, but fortunately we were shown the
way to the thumping of StingrayFirecracker tubsman Paul Warren, who
did his homework and weaved his way into the songs in about 0.5 hours
of South London rehearsal. Paul IS a rock and roll saviour, and
comes complete with a cool accent. Touching down at JFK saddened
us, however briefly, as we now focus on the Mercury Lounge show, Tuesday,
October 28th at 9:30pm, with Kenny, Phil, Claudia Chopek and Paul Moschella.
See you there.
10/2/03: New UK shows
added The band will be doing a week of dates in London.
Dates added to shows page and updated regularly.
8/6/03: The Mercury show: On August 20th at 9:00
PM we will be gracing the stage of the beautiful Mercury Lounge on Houston
Street. The lineup will be Kenny C. on Guitar and Vocals, Phil
S. on Bass and Bass, Claudia Chopek on Guitar and Violin, and Paul Moschella
on Drums and Vocals. Prepare yourselves.
7/29/03: On the radio: This Sunday, August 3,
2003, at 9:00 PM Shelby will be featured on New York's biggest RAWK
station, Q104.3. They'll be playing "The Wait" on their
"Out Of The Box" program. I can't wait.
Everyone Tune in, tune out, and drop acid.
6/10/03: a show or two: Our higher-ups have roped
in some of the biz who might want to have a piece of "The Luxury
Of Time". Of course they wanted to see us play, so we had
to put the live band back together. This was no easy task as Chad has
long since decided that South Carolina is where it's at, and Phil has
had his right hand in a cast for the last 6 weeks. Therefore,
we enlisted the help of Hoboken luminary Paul Moschella to handle the
drums, who has somehow worked his way into the set in about 10 minutes...what
a pro. We also roped in Claudia Chopek to handle the sensitive
bits on her weeping violin. Meanwhile, Phil has hobbled along
surprisingly well, looking like a Mariachi guitarist as he plays with
his inflexible picking hand. We have pieced together a good set,
and will be playing for this first time in a year on June 25th at the
Tribeca Club; a new downtown hipster joint that's NOT in Williamsburg.
It's good to dust off the cobwebs. The new stuff is great, and
the old stuff is great too. Hope to see you all there. Bring
your earplugs.
3/25/03: The Luxury Of Time ...as the new record has
been aptly titled, is anticipated for release in the summer, 2003. The
track listing is as follows:
Shelby - The Luxury Of Time
1. The Wait
2. Modify Myself
3. Self-Exploding
4. Marigolds
5. Green Eyes
6. Salt Of The Earth
7. Downtown Beeline
8. BEARS
9. Jet Blast (Shame)
10. She's All Right
11. A Tad Too Close
12. Blue Becomes You
13. The Riviera
14. Let It Be Me
2/21/03: Master of our
Universe. What started off as a humble little record has certainly wandered
down great paths we never dreamed. Who knew that we'd be mastering this
record with Howie Weinberg? If you don't know who he is, click here
to see his lengthy resume. Above all that, Howie is a great guy; a kind
of hyper-kinetic spiritual rock guru. He weaves his magic in a dark
little mastering studio with great big knobs everywhere and bright lights
flashing, all at 120db. He has a knack for making records sparkle, and
the Shelby stuff blasting out of his speakers is proof positve. Mastering
is the final stage of recording. No more BS. The record is done and
ready to press. Please stand by...
1/14/03: Mixing up a storm.
Too much work has gone into the new record to have it mixed just anywhere,
so we phoned up our bean counters and bankers to see what they could
scour up and somehow they managed to finagle us into The Looking Glass
Studios; a posh, tony, civilized establishment (complete with hi-tech
luxuries we're not accustomed to such as as chairs, running water and
telephones) owned by Philip Glass and located smack-dab in the center
of The Village. The Looking Glass is good...really good. Good enough
for Bowie, who is recording his new record down the hall from us. We
feel quite blessed to be there. We've been working long days/nights
with tireless engineer extraordinaire Christian Rutledge, who we quickly
determined has some of the best ears around. Christian also has a knack
for keeping us in line and making sure we don't over-produce ourselves
into the stratosphere. Also, a very, very grateful nod goes to studio
manager Kara Bilof who made it possible for Shelby to work at The Looking
Glass in the first place and always makes us feel welcome and comfortable.
Many Thanks!
The music is good...
Things are good...
12/2/02: Bring out the
big guns. Throughout the band's history we have been blessed with the
musical talents of a several luminaries; most recently Simone Pace of
Blonde Redhead fame. Simone has spent many late night hours adding various
percussion bits to our songs and has given artful insights towards many
of the arrangements. In exchange for his time and talent, I was bestowed
the honor of recording keyboards on some new Blonde Redhead stuff yet
unheard by the general masses. We're pretty happy to be in their company.
Besides...Simone rides beautiful motorcycles, which is most important.
11/8/02: More roughs.
Click here to download a rough mix of "The Wait". Not too
shabby, if I may say so myself. We're looking at some pretty decent
studios to mix these songs for real, like real people do. More music
soon, for sure.
October 25, 2002: I just couldn't contain myself. By clicking here you
get a rough mix of our future mega-hit "Salt Of The Earth".
This MP3 showcases just about all that we can toss into a song, including
but not limited to: spooky guitars, lumbering bass, plaintive violins,
Manzarek-esque Wurlitzer piano, flat vocals, etc. (Artist Disclaimer:
The real vocals are yet to come). It's an epic (5mb), so be patient
while it loads. Please, enjoy.
9/24/02: Big Violins.
A few of the new songs were initially written, at least in part, on
synthesizers. As the recording focused, our feeling was that real, living
strings could take the songs to heights the keyboards could only dream
of going. Enter violinist Claudia Chopek, who has worked out beautiful
string arrangements for several of the new songs. Claudia will be recording
with us in October. Immediately following the strings, the arduous mixing
process will begin in a yet undisclosed studio. This is definitely our
"big second record".
8/19/02: 15 new songs.
Basic tracks to 15 spanking-new Shelby songs were completed in mid-August.
The songs have come out quite well and are taking on a more pointed
direction over the Songs | 8 record. There will certainly be more multi-instrumentation
experimentation on this record, including percussion, keyboards, strings
and orchestration. Some immediate standout tracks are "Blue Becomes
You" and "Green Eyes", as well as a few songs that have
never been played live. Overdubs and mixing lie ahead. There goes my
tan
.
6/14/02: Shelby goes into
dark, dank, un-airconditioned recording studio to begin work on a new
record. It is a band habit to write songs, record them quickly for reference,
then file them away in a dusty corner. One day in the spring of 2002
we sat in our studio and played back everything we had "notepadded"
in the past year and realized the band needed to put down some of these
songs in a more serious fashion. After long, protracted negotiations
with the notorious Merc Records, we finally had the business side of
things in order. On June 16th, in the infamous 706 Studios, the drums
went to tape and Chad was free to be. Next up, Bass and Guitars. As
the recordings progress, I will update this page as often as I can.
Love,
Kenny
